Madison, Wisconsin

Madison is one of only two U.S. cities built on an isthmus. Nestled between lakes Mendota and Monona, Madison is renowned for its beautiful, four-season scenery. The State Capitol building is the city’s signature landmark. No building in Madison can rise higher than the 284-foot granite dome, which is modeled after our nation’s capitol. State Street, a mile-long pedestrian mall, links the Capitol Square to the University of Wisconsin-Madison and offers shopping, museums, theaters, restaurants and lounges. Finally, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the nation's first established dairy school, is home to state-of-the-art research facilities, University of Wisconsin-Madison Hospital & Clinics, the Chazen Museum of Art, University of Wisconsin-Madison Athletics, the Wisconsin Memorial Union, and more nationally known programs and landmarks.

Time Zone

Madison is in the U.S. Central Time Zone, which is one hour behind the Eastern Time Zone Standard Time, one hour ahead of Mountain Time, and two hours ahead of Pacific Time.

International Time Zone examples: 07:00 AM in Madison is 14:00 (02:00 PM) in Paris, France, or 09:00 AM in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, or 20:00 (08:00 PM) in Beijing, China.

Sustainability Efforts

Frank Lloyd Wright first envisioned Monona Terrace at its present site in 1938. This dream became reality in 1997 with its creation, honoring the legacy of the renowned architect. This continues through its sustainability initiatives as a “green building”. The facility was first certified in 2007 at the Silver Level of the U.S. Green Building Council at the Silver Level. In 2015, the efforts were further recognized with advancement to the Gold Level, certified by the prestigious Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB). The award recognizes the continued efforts of Monona Terrace to promote a whole-building approach to sustainability.

Additionally, Monona Terrace and Monona Catering have been in partnership with UW Wisconsin’s WE CONSERVE composting program since 2010. The project annually diverts about 20 tons of organic kitchen waste from landfills, reducing the production of methane into the atmosphere. The organic materials are then recycled into a nutrient-rich soil amendment which is sold to area farmers and used on campus landscaping projects.
